A recent report by the UN Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression and Opinion finds that gendered disinformation is both a strategy to silence the free expression of women and gender nonconforming persons and a threat to their safety and health, as well as a possible form of online gender-based violence.
On October 13, “The Gender Dimensions of Disinformation”—a UN side event—will discuss the report’s findings and implications.
The event is being held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and can be watched both in-person or online in English, French, Spanish and International Sign Language.
Advance registration is required for both online and in-person attendees.
Martin Onyango, the Center’s Associate Director of Legal Strategies for Africa, will speak at the event, which is sponsored by the United Kingdom Mission to the UN and will be hosted by the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression and Opinion, the Center for Reproductive Rights, the Association for Progressive Communications, Access Now, and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

“Gendered disinformation and its implications for the right to freedom of expression”
The report finds that gendered disinformation is both a strategy to silence the free expression of women and gender nonconforming persons and a threat to their safety and health, as well as a possible form of online gender-based violence.
The presentation will focus on findings from the Special Rapporteur’s report and explore the ways in which the weaponization of disinformation against women in public spaces is a form of gender-based violence; a freedom of expression issue; and a threat to the rights to life, health and freedom from violence. States, researchers and practitioners will discuss actions needed to address the challenge of gendered disinformation from a multistakeholder point of view.
To attend the discussion in person or online, please register below.
