Lawsuit Targets Texas Abortion Law Deputizing Citizens to Enforce Six-week Ban
In this Washington Post piece about the lawsuit brought by the Center and it partners to block Texas’ ban on abortion at six weeks of pregnancy, Center President and CEO Nancy Northup said, “The state has put a bounty on the head of any person or entity who so much as gives a patient money for an abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, before most people know they are pregnant. Worse, it will intimidate loved ones from providing support for fear of being sued.” The ban incentivizes individuals to sue abortion providers and anyone who helps a person obtain an abortion.
Marc Hearron, Senior Counsel for the Center, said the law “allows any ideologically motivated party out there to bring a case across the state.” He went on to say that lawmakers intended to “distract and prevent providers from being able to provide constitutionally protected health care to their patients.”
