NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund Amicus Brief in Zurawski v. State of Texas
Brief filed in Zurawski v. State of Texas.
Amicus is the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund (LDF), the nation’s first and foremost civil rights law organization. LDF argues that Texas’s abortion bans infringe upon constitutional rights of Texans by denying life and health-preserving abortion care. They document the history of government sanctioned violence and reproductive coercion directed at Black women. Further, they explain how the abortion bans continue this legacy. In particular, Black Texans are particularly at risk of life- and health-threatening consequences from pregnancy and disproportionately harmed by the inability to access life- and health-preserving abortion care under the Texas bans. Amici argue that the unworkable medical exceptions are exacerbating existing poor maternal health outcomes for Black people pregnant in Texas.
