Athletes Amicus Brief in Zurawski v. State of Texas
Brief filed in Zurawski v. State of Texas.
Amici are women athletes who have lived, played, or trained in Texas; the Women’s National Basketball Players Association; the National Women’s Soccer League Players Association; Women’s Sports Foundation; and Athletes for Impact. Amici explain how women’s participation in athletics brings personal, societal, and economic benefits to the state of Texas. They argue that sports are integral to Texas’ culture and economy, and that the level of participation and success of women’s athletics in Texas would not have been possible without protections for obtaining necessary medical treatment during pregnancy. Further, they explain how ongoing denial of medically necessary pregnancy care in Texas threatens the future of Texas women’s athletics, as the denial of bodily integrity and decisional autonomy prevents women from fully and equally participating in sports.
