Joint Statement Calling for Abortion Law Reform in England and Wales
The Center for Reproductive Rights has joined a coalition of organizations calling for abortion laws in England and Wales to be modernized in line with World Health Organization guidelines, including for abortion to be decriminalized and legal entitlements to be centered on the right of women to access abortion care.
In England and Wales, laws still do not allow abortion on request and instead require that two doctors provide authorization for abortion on socio-economic grounds. Laws criminalize women who obtain abortion care outside of legal grounds and in 2022-2023 at least three women have been charged for alleged illegal abortions.
