Nancy Northup on Maddow
Two days after the U.S. Supreme Court issued its historic ruling strongly reaffirming abortion rights, Center for Reproductive Rights president and CEO Nancy Northup appeared on MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow to discuss how the victory will affect abortion legislation in the states going forward.
“We are over the moon,” said Northup of the Court’s 5-3 decision blocking provisions of a Texas law that sought to shut down abortion clinics by targeting abortion providers with medically unnecessary restrictions. “This is a complete and total win. It changes the tide.”
Northup noted that in the immediate wake of the ruling, already similar laws have been blocked in three states. The ruling has paved the way for future lawsuits against other abortion restrictions.
“We have had unbelievable support,” says Northup. “We are going to have the fire power to go after these state laws.”
Calling the Center the “prime mover” in this landmark litigation, Maddow noted, “You not only changed jurisprudence on this, you absolutely changed decades of political trajectory.”
