Report: Legal and Human Rights Centre and Center for Reproductive Rights (on behalf of Tanzanian girls) v. The United Republic of Tanzania
In June 2019, the Legal and Human Rights Centre and Center for Reproductive Rights filed a case against the United Republic of Tanzania before the African Committe of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. The case challenged the government’s policy of mandatory and forced pregnancy testing in schools, expulsion of pregnant and married girls from schools and the denial of re-entry of girls into formal schools. In a groundbreaking decision, the Committee found the United Republic of Tanzania violated the girls’ rights and the government’s obligations under the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.
