Veto Letter to North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple: Package of Extreme Abortion Bans and Reproductive Healthcare Restrictions
Read the Center for Reproductive Rights’ letter to North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple urging him to veto an entire package of extreme abortion bans and restrictions on other reproductive healthcare. These bills (HB 1456, HB 1305, SB 2303, SB 2305) are among the most extreme, unconstitutional and harmful legislation considered in the state since Roe v. Wade. For example, House Bill 1456 makes it a crime to provide an abortion after a heartbeat is detected, which is approximately at six weeks of pregnancy. The bill contains exceptions only to save a the life of the woman, or in certain, narrowly defined medical emergencies. By banning abortion so early in pregnancy, the measure would prevent almost all pregnant women in North Dakota from making the basic and fundamental decision about whether to parent a child, choose adoption, or terminate a pregnancy.
