Trump Declared Winner of 2024 Presidential Election

11.6.24 (PRESS STATEMENT) –Today, Donald Trump was declared the winner of the 2024 U.S. presidential election.

Statement from Nancy Northup, President and CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights:

“Donald J. Trump’s election to become the 47th president of the United States is a deadly threat to the democratic values of liberty and equality, the rule of law, and reproductive health, rights, and justice in the United States and around the globe. Anti-rights extremists will soon be back in charge of the White House and the U.S. Senate, wielding power to the detriment of vulnerable populations and seeking to undermine decades of progress on gender equality, a linchpin of which is the ability of individuals to make decisions about their reproductive lives and have access to reproductive health care.

The unnecessary and cruel harm caused by the first Trump administration includes a reproductive health care crisis in vast swaths of the United States that has led to the deaths of numerous women who are likely the tip of the iceberg. President-elect Trump has boasted about appointing three Supreme Court Justices who ultimately overturned Roe v. Wade. In the wake of that ruling, abortion care is nearly or completely banned in 17 states. In vast swaths of the South and Midwest, patients are forced to cross multiple state lines to get care, but many lack the means to do so. Obstetricians are fleeing states where abortion is banned because they cannot properly care for their patients, including those experiencing severe pregnancy complications. Obstetricians and medical school residents don’t want to work in these states, creating maternal health deserts.

A second Trump administration will compound these harms with new, potentially far worse ones. It will seek to stop the availability of medication abortion by mail, which has been a lifeline in post-Roe America. It will attempt to gag all organizations, including U.S.-based ones, from advocating for abortion law reform or providing abortion care abroad, even with their non-U.S. funds. It will push policies designed to disempower reproductive and human rights organizations while aiding their anti-rights counterparts. Such attacks at the federal level will reverberate in the states, undoubtedly leading to more prosecutions, investigations, and lawsuits against providers, patients, and their loved ones.

The Center for Reproductive Rights is ready for this next fight. We will vigorously oppose any and all attempts to roll back progress. We will scrutinize every action of the White House and federal agencies, amass the factual and legal record to counter agency actions, and work to stop harmful policies from going into effect. If they do, we will take them to court. We will vehemently fight any effort to pass a national abortion ban, to stop the provision of medication abortion by mail, to block women from crossing state lines to get care, to dismantle UN protections for reproductive rights and progress made at the national level in countries around the world, and more.

In the states, we will counter actions by zealous anti-rights officials, represent individuals harmed by restrictive abortion bans, and implement the abortion rights protections added to state constitutions. We will not remain on defense. In the many states that are reproductive rights champions, we will advocate for reproductive freedom and equitable access to the full spectrum of reproductive health care for all. Despite sending back to the White House the man responsible for the reversal of Roe v. Wade, the election again confirmed that Americans support reproductive rights with voters passing ballot initiatives in seven states adding protections for abortion rights into their state constitutions.

We will work side by side with our broad, diverse, and strong coalition of organizations and individuals, which includes a network of 2,000+ pro bono lawyers worldwide, to robustly counter the very real threat of the incoming Trump administration and to take the fight to them at every turn.”
