Trump and the Supreme Court: What Happens Now?
The consequences of Donald Trump’s election as president may be enormous for the makeup of the U.S. Supreme Court. Trump has pledged to appoint conservative, anti-choice justices, beginning with the spot on the Court left open by the death of Antonin Scalia.
“President-elect Trump has publicly pledged to overturn Roe and promised punishment for the one in three American women who will have an abortion in her lifetime,” said Nancy Northup, president of the Center for Reproductive Rights, in the Washington Post.
In the long term, a bigger problem looms because the three justices who have supported reproductive rights—Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, and Anthony Kennedy—are the oldest on the Court.
