Trump administration threatens lawyers who challenge the administration and its policies
President Trump issued a Presidential Memorandum to the Attorney General and Secretary of Homeland Security directing them to impose sanctions or refer for disciplinary action any lawyer or legal entity who has, in their opinion, acted unethically, brought frivolous lawsuits, or otherwise violated professional conduct rules in lawsuits against the government. With this Memorandum, the President is using his executive powers to threaten lawyers with financial sanctions, disbarment, and other consequences, in an attempt to discourage them from bringing legal challenges against the administration and its policies. Lawsuits are a critical tool for holding the administration accountable. At the time this Presidential Memorandum was issued, the Trump administration had already been sued more than 130 times since the inauguration, with numerous injunctions in place.
