STILL Talking about Birth Control?
Millions of women receive their health insurance through Catholic-affiliated businesses.
And yet, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops wants to deny these women the right to copay-free contraception—even though the White House has guaranteed the church wouldn’t need to pay a dime.
Right now, the Center for Reproductive Rights is on Capitol Hill working to keep the new birth control benefit intact. We have decades of U.S. constitutional law expertise and the track record to fight back and to stop the bishops from imposing their beliefs on our constitutional rights.
In a recent press release, the bishops compared themselves to Martin Luther King writing his “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” and a priest in San Francisco called this “our Rosa Parks moment.’’ But these assertions couldn’t be further from the truth.
The bishops’ attack on reproductive health care has absolutely nothing to do with religious liberty and everything to do with controlling women’s bodies.
Catholic dioceses and evangelical organizations across the country have filed more than 20 lawsuits against the no-copay birth control benefit.
And now, the bishops have organized nationwide rallies around the “Fortnight for Freedom,” beginning on June 21 and running two weeks, to protest contraceptive coverage.
They are fully willing to cross the line separating church and state to prevent women from getting the health care they need.
We cannot let this happen. The healthcare of millions cannot be dictated by the anti-woman fervor of a few.
