Statement on the Sweeping Senate Attempt to Defund Planned Parenthood and Maine Family Planning
Statement from Nancy Northup, President and CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights:
“This bill’s attack on Planned Parenthood is unacceptable and sweeps in other trusted healthcare providers like our client Maine Family Planning, whose 18 clinics across the state provide a broad array of preventative and primary care services in communities in need. Patients of Maine Family Planning, half of whom rely on Medicaid, may face clinic closures and be shut out of accessing essential health care.
The provision would bar Maine Family Planning from providing health care such as contraception, STI testing, and cervical cancer screenings to Medicaid patients. All patients should have the freedom to pick their own trusted health care professionals, and ‘defunding’ Maine Family Planning, along with Planned Parenthood clinics nationwide, would eliminate that choice and target communities that already face barriers to care.
This is not a drill. Maine Family Planning is the Title X grantee for the state and a lifeline for many residents.
The bill is so close to passing, but there’s still time to stop it and avoid disaster.”
