Statement from the Center on State AG’s plan to appeal decision finding Oklahoma abortion law unconstitutional
(PRESS STATEMENT) Wednesday, one day after a State district court judge ruled that a new Oklahoma abortion law violated the State’s constitution, the Oklahoma Attorney General announced that the State would appeal the decision to the Oklahoma Supreme Court.
In response to this announcement, Stephanie Toti, lead attorney for the Plaintiff in Nova Health Systems d/b/a Reproductive Services v. Drew Edmondson, issued the following statement:
“This law, which demeans women’s capacity to make decisions and threatens abortion providers with arbitrary criminal sanctions, plainly violates the Oklahoma Constitution. The district court’s decision to strike it down was a victory for the rule of law. “We are disappointed that the state Attorney General is committed to defending this unconstitutional law, but we are confident that the Oklahoma Supreme Court will affirm the sound decision rendered by the district court.”
