Shadow Letter on Hungary to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women
In January, the Center for Reproductive Rights and its Hungarian partner, PATENT Association, submitted a shadow letter to the 54th session of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women on the situation of women and girls’ sexual and reproductive rights in Hungary.
The letter highlights the need to eliminate barriers in access to safe abortion services, such as mandatory waiting period and biased counseling requirements, and the lack of available medical abortion options. It also addresses the inadequately regulated practice of conscientious objection to abortion, the limited access to affordable contraceptive methods and to emergency contraception, the absence of adequate sexuality education in schools, and reproductive health services for survivors of sexual violence.
The letter urges the Committee to address the need to end the Hungarian Government’s interference with women’s sexual and reproductive health rights that seek to negatively influence the public view on abortion and contraception.
