Supreme Court Says States Can Ban Gender-Affirming Care for Young People
06.18.25 (PRESS STATEMENT) — Today, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a Tennessee ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth in the case U.S. v. Skrmetti. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of a 16-year-old transgender girl and her parents, and two other plaintiff families, along with a Memphis-based physician.
Statement from Nancy Northup, president & CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights:
“With this ruling, the Supreme Court has once again taken a wrecking ball to Americans’ rights to make decisions about their own bodies. Overturning Roe v. Wade was the first domino, setting the stage for other personal liberties to fall. Today it’s the rights of transgender people, and next we expect politicians will come after birth control, IVF—anything that empowers us to make decisions about our own bodies and futures. In this ruling, the Court claims that it’s not discriminatory to ban health care that is tied to sex, the same flawed argument it cited to overturn Roe. Whether or not this decision impacts you personally, we should all be alarmed—bodily autonomy is on the chopping block and it won’t stop here. This lawless assault on our fundamental rights must stop.”
