Hearing in the Case of Celia Ramos: Media Highlights
In Peru during the 1990s, thousands of women were forcibly sterilized as part of a State policy—including Celia Ramos, who died in 1997 after undergoing surgical sterilization without her valid consent.
On May 22, the Center for Reproductive Rights and its partners argued the case of Celia Ramos at a public hearing before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR)—the first time a case addressing Peru’s forced sterilization policy has been brought before the IACtHR.
