José E. Alvarez
José
E. Alvarez, a leading international law scholar and
co-editor in chief of the American Journal of International Law,
is the Herbert and Rose Rubin Professor of International
Law at New York University School of Law.
He is the former Hamilton Fish Professor of International Law and
Diplomacy and executive director of the Center on Global Legal Problems at
Columbia Law School. From 2006-2008, he
served as President of the American Society of International Law (ASIL). Prior to entering academia on a full time
basis in 1989, Professor Alvarez was an attorney adviser with the Office of the
Legal Adviser of the U.S. Department of State. Professor Alvarez has also been
in private practice and was a judicial clerk to the late Hon. Thomas Gibbs Gee
of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. He
is an elected
member of the Institut de Droit International, other memberships include the Council on Foreign Relations and the U.S.
Department of State’s Advisory Committee on Public International Law. (New
