Policy Brief: Advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in the European Union
The European Union is founded on the core values of human rights, rule of law, and gender equality, but these values can only be fully realized when sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) are guaranteed for all. Despite significant progress in advancing SRHR within EU law and policy in recent years, these protections remain vulnerable to persistent threats that risk undermining decades of advancements.
As a new legislative term begins, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have a pivotal role to play in promoting and advancing SRHR in EU law and policy.
This policy brief by the Center for Reproductive Rights, published September 2024, provides a comprehensive overview of the necessary information for MEPs to build on progress achieved under the past legislature and ensure continued progress on SRHR across the EU and beyond over the next five years.
The brief outlines the EU’s competence in areas relevant to SRHR, describes actions that MEPs can take to advance SRHR and highlights key resolutions adopted by the European Parliament in the previous term. It also identifies the main SRHR challenges within the EU and summarizes the international human rights obligations of EU member states in this area.
