Pathways to Change: Building Stronger Legal Guarantees for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights

Pathways to Change presents the stories and strategies that have advanced sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in countries around the world.

Designed for activists and organizations working on SRHR issues, it features case studies from 13 countries about strategies that helped to build legal guarantees to advance SRHR—from Ireland to Peru, from Kenya to the Philippines, and beyond.

Since each country presents its own unique SRHR challenges—shaped by social, cultural, historical, legal, and political factors—this manual offers strategies and actionable tactics that can be tailored to work in a variety of settings around the world.

With Pathways to Change, you’ll learn about how change was made in 13 countries where advocacy and legal strategies ended abortion bans and increased access to care; protected women from forced sterilization practices; increased adolescents’ access to health services; improved the treatment of women in maternal health facilities; increased access to emergency contraceptives; and much more.

Published by 23 organizations with first-hand experience of working to secure the reform of laws and policies on SRHR, Pathways to Change shares experience and learning on:

  • Developing alliances with other organizations and across movements.

  • Mobilizing public engagement in support of change, including at the grassroots level.

  • Leveraging evidence to make a case for reform.

  • Engaging politically to increase support from government and policy makers.

  • Using national judicial strategies where relevant.

  • Effectively advocating at international accountability bodies.
