Obama Administration Reaffirms Commitment to Women’s Reproductive Health Care
(PRESS RELEASE) The Obama Administration reaffirmed its commitment to preserve the copay-free birth control benefit for all women under the Affordable Care Act — announcing today practical solutions that will give women access to this essential benefit while allowing even those religiously affiliated employers that self-insure to opt out of paying for contraceptive coverage.Said Nancy Northup, president and CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights:“We applaud the Obama Administration’s continued commitment to ensuring that all American women have ready access to a broad range of contraceptives as a copay-free preventive health service. “The Administration’s approach to implementing this benefit is practical and constitutional, but most of all, it’s just good common sense. Nearly half of all pregnancies in this country are unintended, and better access to affordable contraception will reduce unintended pregnancies by the millions and save American taxpayers billions of dollars every year.“This is an historic advancement in women’s health and we urge the Administration to continue to stand strong against the relentless challenges leveled against it.”Earlier this month, the Center for Reproductive Rights issued a comprehensive reply to the recent contraception controversy, which takes a closer look at the arguments by opponents of the contraception requirement, unpacks the legal issues and public health debate, and responds to many erroneous assertions. This document also analyzes the similarities between the Administration’s accommodation for religious groups in the Affordable Care Act and the way Catholic organizations have dealt with family planning coverage under Medicaid.
