What Happened

The Trump administration finalized a rule banning abortion care and counseling at VA health care facilities nationwide — even in states where abortion is protected. The rule only allows a narrow exception to save a veteran’s life, and exceptions like this often fail in real emergencies. This is one of the most extreme abortion bans in the country.

For more than 400,000 women veterans who live in states that severely restrict or ban abortion, the VA was the only place they could get necessary abortion care. Now they must find a new, unfamiliar provider and pay out of pocket — and they may be turned away by local providers and emergency rooms, forcing them to travel hundreds of miles for care.

How the Center Fought Back

We backed Congressional Review Act resolutions in the House and Senate — S.J.Res.103 and H.J.Res.144 — to overturn this rule and collected over 5,500 submissions from supporters speaking out against it.

Why donate? Women in states with abortion bans are 2X as likely to die.

With active cases in 10 states, your donation helps defend patients who need access to life-saving healthcare. With your support, the Center can continue fighting for our fundamental human rights.

By the numbers

More than two million women veterans live in the U.S. today, along with thousands of transgender men and nonbinary veterans who may need abortion care. Over 700,000 family members of veterans also get their care from the VA. They all deserve access to the full range of reproductive health care, including abortion.
