State Department moves forward with plans to destroy millions of dollars worth of contraceptives
- Executive Actions
The State Department is proceeding with the destruction of approximately $9.7 million worth of contraceptives—including IUDs, implants, pills, and condoms—originally intended for women in low-income countries. Now, due to the Administration’s dismantling of USAID, foreign aid restrictions, and the State Department’s refusal to distribute or sell the products to organizations that provide abortion services or counseling, the contraceptives have languished in warehouses in Belgium and Dubai and will soon be incinerated at a cost to U.S. taxpayers. Many of the items are still years from expiration and were meant for vulnerable populations, including adolescent girls and women in crisis zones across sub-Saharan Africa.
