The National Institutes for Health (NIH) announced that it will no longer support research using human fetal tissue from “elective abortions,” reinstating and expanding a ban put in place during the first Trump administration which caused disruptions in research on “HIV, cancer, and coronaviruses.” As a result, both in-house government research projects and federally funded scientific research at outside institutions that use donated fetal tissue are prohibited. The policy went into immediate effect.
