The rollercoaster ride in Arkansas continues. Just days after Gov. Mike Beebe vetoed a ban on abortion after 20 weeks, both arms of the Arkansas legislature demonstrated their determination to choke off access to reproductive rights through blatantly unconstitutional measures. First, the House of Representatives and then the Senate overrode Gov. Beebe’s veto. The 20-week ban is now the law in Arkansas.

Meanwhile, the Senate passed a more extreme bill that bans abortion at 12 weeks that poses a severe threat to a woman’s health and future as well as her constitutional rights. That bill now heads to Gov. Mike Beebe’s desk, where he can either sign it or veto the measure, according to Reuters:

“I’m pretty sure I know what I’m going to do on a bill that’s even more problematic than the one I already vetoed, but I won’t tell you officially until that time,” Beebe said Tuesday.

While Gov. Beebe is indicating that he plans to dismiss this offensive bill, it remains to be seen whether legislators will see how harmful this radical proposal will truly be.
