Nancy Northup, president of the Center for Reproductive Rights, appeared on a segment of MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry show to debate the continued public funding of “crisis pregnancy centers”—phony clinics that counsel women not to have abortions, often using misleading information—while Planned Parenthood simultaneously faces massive defunding efforts.
“Women are at the center of this. They need to be able to make their decisions for themselves,” said Northup. “We need to respect women in making those decisions, and that’s not what the deceptive practices of crisis pregnancy centers do.”
Women with unplanned pregnancies are often lured by false advertising to seek help from such groups, believing they offer reproductive health services. In fact, these fake clinics dispense information so manifestly inaccurate and harmful that several states have had to step in and stop their practices.
