Mike Waltz
As U.N. Ambassador, Waltz will act as the nation’s official spokesperson to the U.N. General Assembly and will participate in deliberations, negotiations, and votes on Resolutions in the Security Council, which then become binding law if passed. The U.N. Ambassador also heads the United States Mission to the United Nations (USUN) and provides policy advice and information about U.N. activity to the President, Secretary of State, and other key stakeholders. Notably, the U.N. Ambassador has significant influence on global norms and processes related to sexual and reproductive health and rights and represents the U.S. before international human rights and gender equality bodies.
Top Red Flags
- Cosponsored numerous pieces of anti-abortion legislation, receiving an A+ rating from the anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.
- Celebrated the overturning of Roe v. Wade, calling it “overreaching and unconstitutional legislating from the Supreme Court.”
- Supports the idea that life begins at conception and cosponsored a bill that would have given legal rights to embryos, effectively banning abortion nationwide.
Litigation
Waltz was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2019. As a Representative, he joined various amicus briefs supporting litigation efforts to restrict access to abortion care, including the below.
- Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA: encouraging the Supreme Court to reinstate restrictions on medication abortion and claiming that the “FDA’s lawless deregulation of mifepristone subverts patient safeguards and contravenes federal laws.”
- Moyle v. United States: arguing that the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) “does not contain a national abortion mandate for ‘stabilizing’ abortions” and that the Biden administration’s policy, which requires health care providers subject to EMTALA to provide emergency stabilizing treatment, including abortion care, “contravenes Congress’ pro-life policy stance.”
- Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization: urging the Supreme Court to overturn the constitutional right to abortion cemented in Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey and to “affirm the constitutional authority of the federal and state governments to safeguard the lives and health of their citizens, born and not yet born.”
- June Medical Services LLC v. Russo: urging the Supreme Court to uphold a Louisiana Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers (TRAP) law that placed onerous and medically unnecessary requirements on abortion providers, and to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Legislation
Waltz was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2019, serving Florida’s 6th congressional district. During the most recent 118th Congress, he cosponsored the below pieces of anti-abortion legislation.
- “Life at Conception Act” (H.R. 431)
- Enshrines legal rights for embryos into law in an attempt to ban abortion nationwide.
- “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act” (H.R. 7)
- Prohibits the use of federal funds for abortions, or to subsidize health plans that cover abortion, except in cases of rape, incest, or to save the life of the pregnant person.
- Prohibits federal health care facilities and federal employees from providing abortions.
- Requires disclosure of any abortion coverage and related surcharges in health plans offered through the Affordable Care Act.
- “Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act” (H.R. 26)
- Establishes vague requirements as to how abortion providers are to perform their jobs—mandating that they “provide the same degree of care to an infant born alive after an abortion or attempted abortion as they would to any other newborn”—coupled with criminal penalties of up to five years in prison for failing to comply.
- Uses stigmatizing language and the threat of harsh penalties to shame patients and scare providers from providing safe, quality abortion care.
- “Support and Value Expectant (SAVE) Moms and Babies Act of 2023” (H.R. 427)
- Prohibits the approval of new abortion medications, bans investigational use exemptions for abortion medications, and imposes onerous additional regulatory requirements on previously approved abortion medications.
- Requires in-person administration of medication abortion by certified health care practitioners and mandates reporting of adverse events.
- Allows federal or state governments to impose further requirements or restrictions on abortion medications.
- Waltz also cosponsored a resolution “Expressing the sense of Congress condemning the recent attacks on pro-life facilities, groups, and churches” (H.Con.Res. 3).
Statements
Consistently used problematic, false, and inflammatory rhetoric on abortion, such as:

- Waltz called Roe v. Wade “overreaching and unconstitutional legislating from the Supreme Court” and celebrated its overturning.
- During a speech on the House Floor, Waltz claimed that fetuses have a fundamental right to live and stated his belief that “abortion is one of the greater tragedies of our generation.”
Publications
- Waltz signed onto a letter from “pro-life legislators” thanking President Trump for his efforts to support anti-abortion policies and requesting that he end taxpayer funding for human embryonic stem cell research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
