Manju & Others v. Government of Nepal

The Asia program’s new fact sheet features a groundbreaking reproductive rights case, Manju &, Others v. Government of Nepal, which was filed in the Supreme Court of Nepal in September 2013, by Justice for All. The case highlights the high risk of unintended pregnancy in Nepal due to the unmet need for modern contraceptives, particularly in rural and marginalized communities. The petition asks the Supreme Court to instruct the government to ensure universal access to a broad range of modern contraceptives and related information and services as matter of women’s fundamental rights under Nepal’s Interim Constitution and human rights as recognized in international law. This is the first case filed under the Center’s South Asia Reproductive Justice and Accountability Initiative (SARJAI), a program created by lawyers to promote legal accountability for violations of women’s reproductive rights in South Asia.
