Louisiana’s School of Discrimination?
A Louisiana charter school, financed by public funds, finds itself the target of nationwide attention because of a school policy that the ACLU is calling
both unconstitutional and a complete failure to the educational needs of its students. According to Mother Jones:
[Delhi Charter School’s] “student pregnancy policy” states that the school seeks to ensure that students “exhibit acceptable character traits”-and in order
to do so, allows the school to force any “suspected student” to take a pregnancy test.
The school forces any student testing positive into mandatory home schooling, an action that hearkens back to the buttoned-up 1950s.
Interestingly enough, Louisiana recently rejected comprehensive sex education, instead relying on teaching abstinence. And the state ranks among the top
five for highest rates of sexually transmitted diseases.
