Isabel Allende, Centro de Derechos Reproductivos y la Corporación Miles, presentan un poderoso testimonio sobre la importancia de la legalización del aborto en el país

(COMUNICADO DE PRENSA) ,El día de hoy, defensores/as de derechos humanos y salud reproductiva abogaron por la legalización del aborto ante el principal órgano de derechos humanos de la región, en una audiencia sobre la situación del proyecto de ley para sobre aborto en Chile.


Durante la audiencia en el periodo de sesiones de la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos que ,se lleva a cabo en Buenos Aires, Argentina, el Centro de Derechos Reproductivos, Miles Chile y la Fundación Isabel Allende, testificaron sobre el proceso de reforma de la ley del aborto en Chile, y le pidieron a la Comisión que hiciera un llamado al Congreso para que agilice aprobación de la legislación.


El 25 de enero, el Senado chileno votó para adelantar un proyecto de ley que permitiría a las mujeres acceder a servicios de aborto legal y seguro cuando la vida de la mujer esté en peligro, en los casos de violencia sexual, o en los casos de inviabilidad. Sin embargo, las comisiones dentro del Senado han retrasado el debate de los artículos específicos del proyecto de ley.


Lilian Sepúlveda, vicepresidenta del Programa Legal Global del Centro de Derechos Reproductivos, mencionó:


“Como mujer, madre y chilena, es hora de que mi gobierno reforme sus leyes de aborto. ,


“La prohibición del aborto en Chile ha obligado a demasiadas mujeres a continuar con embarazos no planeados que ponen su salud en gran riesgo.


“La Comisión Interamericana y los/as que defienden la salud reproductiva de las mujeres en todo el mundo, deben continuar presionando al Congreso chileno para que apruebe este importante proyecto de ley”.


En la audiencia, una mujer chilena, Paola Valenzuela, compartió su lamentable historia al tener que llevar un embarazo inviable a término en el año 2015. La reconocida autora y activista Isabel Allende, hizo un llamado a la Comisión, en el que le pide solicitar al gobierno chileno que apruebe el proyecto de ley sobre el aborto.


La directora de la Corporación Miles, Claudia Dides Castillo, mencionó:


“De no aprobarse el proyecto de ley en los próximos meses, las mujeres y niñas chilenas seguirán pasando angustias y humillaciones, además de ser tratadas como criminales, por tener que practicarse un aborto bajo una de las causales”


En la actualidad, Chile y Surinam son los dos únicos países en América del Sur que no permiten explícitamente el aborto en ninguna circunstancia, incluso cuando el embarazo representa un riesgo para la vida de la mujer. Según el Instituto Guttmacher, casi 200.000 abortos inseguros ocurren cada año en Chile.


Aunque el código de salud de Chile de 1931 legalizó el aborto en ciertas circunstancias, una ley aprobada en 1989 prohibió el aborto en todos los casos, incluso cuando el embarazo pone en peligro la vida de la mujer. Según el Ministerio de Salud de Chile, en el 2008, más de 33.000 mujeres fueron hospitalizadas debido a complicaciones con procedimientos de aborto. ,


En junio del 2015, el Comité de Derechos Económicos, Sociales y Culturales de la ONU (CESCR), le pidió a Chile que apruebe rápidamente la legislación para reformar la ley restrictiva contra el aborto. Este comité de las Naciones Unidas supervisa el cumplimiento del Pacto Internacional de Derechos Económicos, Sociales y Culturales, un tratado que obliga a los Estados miembro a asegurar que todas las personas disfruten en condiciones de igual, diferentes derechos, incluido el derecho a la salud sexual y reproductiva.


Según un informe publicado en el 2014 por el Centro, 35 países han cambiado sus leyes para ampliar el acceso a servicios de aborto seguro y legal en los últimos 20 años, tendencia que ha marcado un importante progreso para mejorar la vida de las mujeres, incluyendo la significativa reducción de las tasas de mortalidad materna causadas por abortos inseguros globalmente. El informe se publicó junto con el mapa actualizado sobre Leyes de Aborto en el Mundo, la herramienta más completa para rastrear las leyes de aborto en todo el mundo.
