Inside Mississippi’s Last Abortion Clinic–And the Biggest Fight for Abortion Rights in a Generation
Time Magazine’s cover story focused on the Center’s upcoming Supreme Court case and its client, Jackson Women’s Health Organization–the last remaining abortion clinic in Mississippi. Shannon Brewer, the director of the clinic, was featured on the cover page. The Center will be arguing the case, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, at the Supreme Court on December 1. The Court will review Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban, which was enacted as a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade. Julie Rikelman, the Center’s litigation director, explained to Time, “The law has been absolutely clear for 50 years that bans on abortion before viability are unconstitutional.”
Brewer commented to Time on the impact of the case, saying, “This is not gonna just affect Mississippi. It’s gonna affect women everywhere.” Brewer credits Diane Derzis, the owner of Jackson Women’s Health Organization, for preparing her to deal with frequent attacks, legal and otherwise, on the clinic and its staff. For Derzis, a case like Dobbs is not a surprise, but an inevitability. She said to Time, “This has been a campaign they [anti-abortion activists] have waged over 45 years.”
