Florida Abortion Amendment Falls Short of 60% Threshold
11.05.24 (PRESS STATEMENT) – A constitutional amendment that would have enshrined the right to abortion in the Florida constitution has fallen short of the 60% of votes needed to pass. The state currently bans abortion at six weeks of pregnancy and also enforces a myriad of other abortion restrictions.
Statement from Nancy Northup, President & CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights:
“Like so many Americans, Floridians are living under an abortion ban they didn’t ask for and don’t want. As the majority of Florida voters made clear tonight, they want their reproductive freedom back. But due to the high 60% threshold and the state’s disinformation campaign, they must continue to live with the fear, uncertainty, and denial of care caused by the reversal of Roe. So too will countless women in the southeastern U.S., which will remain for now a virtual abortion desert.”
