Equitable and non-discriminatory access to fertility health care is a human rights and reproductive justice issue, with millions relying on assisted reproductive technologies like in vitro fertilization (IVF) to build their families. But numerous barriers continue to stand in the way–disproportionately impacting people living on low incomes, people with disabilities, unmarried couples, same-sex couples, and Black, Indigenous, and other people of color. And after the fall of Roe v. Wade, increased legislative attacks on IVF threaten to further undermine patients’ access to care.

The Center for Reproductive Rights works to enact laws that remove barriers and push back against attacks to ensure that individuals can access the fertility health care they need. In 2025, the Center helped draft, Introduce, and support legislation to declare July 27-August 2, 2026 Georgia “Fertility Awareness Week.” The week is an opportunity to raise awareness, share stories and lessons learned, connect people to resources and information, and spark conversations within communities, amongst advocates, patients, and providers, and between legislators and their constituents.

This effort was undertaken alongside the Georgia Fertility Justice Now coalition, a coalition the Center co-founded and co-leads, in lockstep with SPARK Reproductive Justice NOW and The SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective (SisterSong). It is part of an effort to ensure that conversations around fertility health care, including those that explore legislative solutions, center the experiences of Black and LGTBQ+ communities.

Georgia’s first-ever Fertility Awareness Week intentionally coincides with Black (in)Fertility Awareness Week, which SisterSong inaugurated in 2024 to bring attention to fertility health care access as a fertility justice issue.

In collaboration with, and as a part of SisterSong’s Black (in)Fertility Awareness Week and Georgia’s Fertility Awareness Week, the Center for Reproductive Rights is hosting an invite-only webinar for legislators to showcase important proactive efforts happening in the South. This webinar will provide opportunities for participants to share lessons learned and highlight key considerations for lawmakers regarding legislation to expand access to fertility care and defend against attacks on IVF. Featured legislators from GA, NC, and TN will share successes and important efforts in their states that could serve as models. Topics include: (1) protecting the right to IVF/reproductive freedom, including IVF, (2) what meaningful access to assisted reproductive technology, including IVF, looks like, and (3) attacks on IVF and key things to look out for.
