Enid Muthoni Ndiga Joins the Center for Reproductive Rights to Lead Global Legal Program
(Press Release) The Center for Reproductive Rights today announced that Enid Muthoni Ndiga has joined the organization to lead the Center’s Global Legal Program and oversee its four regional programs based in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe, as well as the Center’s global advocacy work at the United Nations.
As Senior Vice President, Global Legal Program, for the nonprofit, non-partisan organization, Enid will be based in Geneva and guide the Center’s litigation, targeted advocacy, and norm-building to advance reproductive rights as fundamental human rights around the world.
“Enid’s extensive experience and leadership will help us continue to strengthen laws and policies around the world as we file groundbreaking cases before national courts, United Nations committees and regional human rights bodies to expand reproductive healthcare, including access to birth control, safe abortion, prenatal and obstetric care, and unbiased information,” said Nancy Northup, president and CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights, which is the only global legal advocacy organization dedicated to reproductive rights with expertise in both U.S. constitutional and international human rights law.
A Kenyan national, Enid has more than 20 years of experience in the fields of law, development, human rights, gender and women’s rights. Before joining the Center, Enid served as Regional Manager for Africa at the International Development Law Organization (IDLO), the only intergovernmental organization exclusively devoted to promoting the rule of law. At IDLO, Enid oversaw programs across seven countries in Africa.
“I am thrilled to join the Center and contribute to its very important, brave and cutting-edge work to ensure that women’s reproductive rights are respected as fundamental human rights globally,” said Enid Muthoni Ndiga. “The importance of the Center’s work cannot be over-emphasized, especially at this time when there is such pushback on the fundamental rights of women, particularly sexual and reproductive rights. I feel greatly honored to be part of this courageous and professional team of experts and to help shape the Center’s norm-building work globally.”
Prior to her leadership position at IDLO headquarters in Rome, Enid was the IDLO Country Director in Kenya for five years. She has also worked for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Norwegian Church Aid, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, and the Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA Kenya. She began her legal career as a litigator in private practice.
Enid has lived and worked in Europe and Africa and has developed strong networks in those regions as well as Asia, cultivating and developing partnerships with complex stakeholders, including governments, academia, and civil society.
She received a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Nairobi, a Post Graduate Diploma in Law from Kenya School of Law, and an MA in Gender and Development from the University of Nairobi.
