Poverty Burdens Amicus Brief

Primary Content
  • Amici are the National Health Law Program and the National Network of Abortion Funds.

  • The brief argues that Act 620 will have a particularly harmful impact on vulnerable populations. Low-income pregnant people are more likely to need abortion care and less likely to be able to afford the service once access is decimated.

  • Low-income people of color, LGBTQ people, and people experiencing intimate partners violence will be disproportionately impacted by the increased travel distances that Act 620 will impose by closing clinics.

  • Act 620 will exacerbate the steep financial hurdles to accessing abortion that already exist, including bans on insurance coverage that force people to pay out-of-pocket, and low-income people who cannot meet the costs will be forced to carry to term with resulting severe harms to their health, security, and well-being.
