The Center's Sara Malkani discusses a significant abortion ruling by India’s top court.
In this op-ed published in Dawn, Sara Malkani, the Center’s legal adviser for Asia, writes about the India supreme court’s ruling that unmarried women are entitled to an abortion under India’s Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act. While abortion is criminalised in India, the MTP Act created exceptions to criminalisation and set forth circumstances under which some abortions could be permitted.
