Criminalization of Abortion in the Philippines Fact Sheet
The Philippines criminalizes abortion without any clear exception. Despite the criminal abortion ban, women and girls continue to undergo abortions which are often performed under unsafe conditions and result in complications that require immediate medical treatment. In this fact sheet, the Center for Reproductive Rights outlines the status of abortion in the Philippines and its effect on women’s and girls’ access to post-abortion care as well as modern contraceptives which have been falsely claimed as abortifacients often by religious dogmatists. It also presents the calls of different UN treaty-monitoring bodies, individual human rights experts, and the Philippine Commission on Human Rights for the Philippine government to review the abortion ban and allow abortion in certain circumstances, and to ensure access to quality post-abortion care.
