Council of the District of Columbia: Opposition Letter re: H.R. 3
On May 3, 2011, the members of the Council of the District of Columbia (the elected legislature of Washington, D.C.) unanimously signed a letter strongly opposing H.R. 3, a congressional bill that would override the will of D.C. voters and permanently prohibit the District from using its own, local funds to support abortion services for low-income women. The bill would not only intrude on women’s reproductive health rights, but also on the right of the District to freely spend its own funds.
In addition, the bill would prohibit women who receive any government health subsidy from using their own money to pay for health insurance that includes abortion coverage, and would punitively tax small businesses offering such health insurance to their employees. More information about H.R. 3 >,
