Congress Poised to Pass Budget Slashing Reproductive Health Care
06.23.25 (POSITION STATEMENT)—The U.S. Senate is expected to vote this week on the so-called “big beautiful bill”—a federal government funding bill that has already passed the House and would wreak havoc on reproductive healthcare throughout the country. The bill could shut down a huge percentage of Planned Parenthood clinics by barring them from accepting Medicaid patients for non-abortion services such as STI testing, cervical cancer screenings, and contraception.
Statement from Nancy Northup, President and CEO at the Center for Reproductive Rights:
“This bill is a full-scale attack on Planned Parenthood—it could shut down hundreds of their clinics across the U.S., leaving a massive gap in our country’s healthcare system. Millions of people rely on these clinics for STI testing, cervical cancer screenings, contraception, and more. If this bill passes, many people will have nowhere else affordable to go for these services. The U.S. health care system is already stretched thin—the government should not be further limiting where people can get health care. Patients should have the freedom to pick their health care provider.
For decades, anti-abortion politicians have been scheming to close Planned Parenthood clinics, and now they may actually do it. This shameful bill will gut Medicaid, exacerbate the nationwide health care crisis, and once again target communities who already find it hard to get health care. The ultimate goal of this shameful bill is to push abortion out of reach for even more Americans. Congress must reject it.”
