Center Named Top Reproductive Rights Non-Profit by Philanthropic Experts
(PRESS RELEASE) The Center for Reproductive Rights is honored to be named one of the top high-impact organizations working on women’s reproductive health, rights, and justice by the philanthropic organization Philanthropedia. This year, Philanthropedia surveyed a large group of funders, researchers, nonprofit senior staff and government officials who have an average of 18 years in the field and asked them to identify those non-profit organizations that were making the largest impact in reproductive health. Philanthropedia helps donors to give more strategically.”It is an absolute honor for Philanthropedia and philanthropic experts to recognize the Center’s work in the reproductive health, rights, and justice movement,” said Nancy Northup, president of the Center for Reproductive Rights. “Without the support of individual donors and foundations, we could not have won key legal victories that redefine the legal landscape in countries around the world nor taken on some of the most significant challenges in reproductive rights laws and policies. As always, we have an ambitious plan for the coming years and look forward to working with our supporters as we set on that course.”The Center for Reproductive Rights is a global human rights organization that has used the law to advance reproductive freedom as a fundamental human right that all governments are legally obligated to protect, respect, and fulfill. It is the only global legal advocacy organization dedicated to reproductive rights, with expertise in both U.S. constitutional and international human rights law.”We are thrilled with the results of our research on women’s reproductive health, rights, and justice nonprofits in the US and are proud to include the Center for Reproductive Rights among the top of this list,” said Erinn Andrews, chief operating officer for Philanthropedia. “It’s an incredible honor to be given this vote of confidence from a mix of 192 experts in the field including program officers at major foundations, prominent professors and researchers, and leaders in the field such as Gloria Steinem. We hope donors will read the thoughtful and thorough expert reviews of this outstanding organization and support the great work they’re doing.” The Center works toward a time when the promise of human dignity, self-determination and equality—all embodied in the U.S. Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights—is enshrined in law in the U.S. and around the world. The organization envisions a world where every woman is free to decide whether and when to have children, where every woman has access to the best reproductive healthcare available, where every woman can exercise her choices without coercion or discrimination. To that end, Center staff has employed high-impact litigation, the promotion of legal scholarship, documentation of human rights abuses, and advocacy at state and national levels around the world. As a result, laws and policies in more than 50 countries have been strengthened. The Center’s accomplishments include: winning the first abortion case before the United Nations Human Rights Committee, liberalizing Nepal’s abortion law, one of the strictest abortion laws in the world, successfully taking the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to court for allowing politics to influence its refusal to make emergency contraception available without a prescription to all age groups, and protecting teens’ access to confidential reproductive healthcare across the U.S.
