Center For Reproductive Rights Statement On Confirmation Of Judge Neil Gorsuch To The Supreme Court
Following an unprecedented vote to change Senate rules yesterday, the Senate voted today to confirm President Donald Trump’s nominee Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court of the United States. Nancy Northup, President and CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights, released the following statement: “Nearly one year after the landmark Supreme Court decision in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt reaffirmed a woman’s constitutional right to make her own decisions about her health, family and future, our fight takes on renewed importance. “Given that President Trump promised to appoint a justice who would overturn Roe v. Wade, Judge Gorsuch, as his nominee, owed the American public direct answers to questions about his agreement or disagreement with the settled jurisprudence on the constitutionally guaranteed right to abortion. Unfortunately, we did not get those answers, and the unprecedented tactics taken in the Senate to change the rules and guarantee Judge Gorsuch’s confirmation threaten the principle of an independent judiciary designed to protect all Americans’ fundamental rights and liberties. “With dozens of reproductive rights cases currently being litigated and hundreds of anti-choice laws making their way through state legislatures, the Center for Reproductive Rights will continue to ensure that a woman can make her own healthcare decisions and the Court does not turn its back on decades of precedent protecting her right to do so.”
