Causa Justa’s “Party of Freedom” Celebrates One-Year Anniversary of Landmark Ruling in Colombia
The Causa Justa Movement celebrates the Constitutional Court of Colombia's historic ruling to decriminalize abortion with events and activities.

One year ago, the Constitutional Court of Colombia issued a landmark ruling to decriminalize abortion up to 24 weeks of gestation. The decision came in response to a 2020 lawsuit filed by the Causa Justa Movement—of which the Center for Reproductive Rights is a member—that sought to eliminate abortion as a crime, reduce barriers to legal abortion care, and end the risk of criminal prosecution for abortion care seekers and providers in Colombia.
From February 21 through the first week of March, Causa Justa is hosting the “Party of Freedom” in Colombia, featuring workshops, performances, and mobilizations in over 15 regions across the country.
At an opening event in Bogotá, movement members met with legislators for a public demonstration where they created a mural and marched to the Constitutional Court. Catalina Martínez Coral, the Center’s regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean, gave a welcome speech, and artists—including Una Nota Perdida, La Mona Soy Yo, and Andrea Echeverri—performed.
The landmark ruling has increased the confidence and safety of Colombians who wish to access abortion without fear of being denounced, persecuted, or criminalized. Since the decision, the Causa Justa Movement has been working to ensure that the ruling is implemented throughout the country. Recently, the Ministry of Health of Colombia passed Resolution 051 of 2023, which requires all health professionals to guarantee access to abortion free of obstacles or discrimination.
The “Party of Freedom” celebration will continue through the first week of March. On March 10, Causa Justa will present a report on access to abortion services during the first year of the ruling.
