Abortion Worldwide: 20 Years of Reform
In
1994, 179 countries came together to adopt the Programme of Action of the
International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), the first
international consensus document in which states recognized that reproductive
rights are human rights that are already enshrined in domestic and
international law. Abortion Worldwide: 20 Years of Reform provides a
comprehensive overview of abortion law reforms in countries across the globe
since ICPD, demonstrating that more than 30 countries have liberalized their
abortion laws, expanding the grounds under which women can legally access
abortion services. At the same time, only a handful of countries have taken
steps to legally restrict abortion or make it more difficult for women to
procure abortions during this time.
