What Just Happened? Unpacking the Recent SCOTUS Decisions
Last June, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down key decisions impacting a cross-section of constitutional issues and rights—including in two cases concerning abortion access—which call into question the future of reproductive healthcare access and the rule of law in the U.S.
In this August webinar, the Center’s Associate Director of U.S. Litigation Autumn Katz joined others to discuss these rulings and what they mean for access to abortion, pregnancy care, and bodily autonomy. More webinar details here.
Combating Originalism in State Courts
State-level constitutional protections are lately being used to challenge the originalist legal philosophy and safeguard individual rights—marking a growing resistance to originalism, which has traditionally been used to roll back reproductive rights.
In this December 2024 webinar, the Center’s Senior Attorney Meetra Mehdizadeh and former Director of Judicial Strategy Diana Kasdan discuss how the Center’s recent cases in North Dakota and Georgia push back against originalist interpretations of the law, exploring the judges’ reasoning, the role of state constitutions, and the cases’ broader implications for reproductive rights. Aracely Muñoz, the Center’s Lawyers Network Director, moderated the discussion. More webinar details here.
In this August 2024 webinar, the Center’s Senior Attorney Hillary Schneller and other legal experts discuss the Center’s case challenging Hawaii’s midwifery restriction law, which had prevented pregnant Hawaiians from receiving pregnancy and birth care from trusted, culturally informed midwives.
The case was brought on behalf of nine midwives, midwifery students, and women planning to grow their families. More webinar details here.
