CRR Calls Ban On Sex- and Race-Selective Abortions a "Cynical" and "Thinly-Veiled Attack" on Women's Rights

12.06.11 - The Center for Reproductive Rights is calling on members of the House of Representatives to reject the latest effort to restrict women's access to safe, legal reproductive health services-specifically targeting women in minority communities.

Today the House Subcommittee on the Constitution will hear testimony on the Prenatal Non-Discrimination Act-introduced by Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ)-which aims to ban abortions done on the basis of sex or race.

"Race and sex discrimination are very real issues, but this cynical bill-while feigning concern about both-does nothing to address either and jeopardizes women's health at the same time," said Nancy Northup, president of the Center for Reproductive Rights. "It's just another thinly-veiled attack on women's fundamental rights by anti-choice politicians who have repeatedly opposed real efforts to eliminate sex and race discrimination. We hope common sense will prevail in today's hearing and that members of the House will reject this extreme and dangerous bill."
